Every kid who walks into a classroom is doing one of the great human things: trying to learn something they don't yet know.
It's a remarkable arrangement when you stop to look at it. A teacher stands in front of thirty students and undertakes to move ideas from her head into theirs — ideas about Java methods, or supply curves, or the slow accumulation of pressures that produced a war. The teacher knows things the students don't. By the end of the year, if everything goes right, the students know them too. The transfer is not magic, but it's close enough to magic that we should be careful with it.
What makes it work, mostly, is the teacher. Not the textbook, not the standards document, not the technology — the human being who decided this was worth doing and showed up, year after year, to do it. A great teacher can rescue almost any curriculum. A weak curriculum, in the hands of a great teacher, becomes the year a student remembers for the rest of their life.
But teachers are also human, which means they are finite. There are only so many evenings, only so many Sundays, only so many hours of patience left at the end of a long day. The work of teaching extends well past the bell — into lesson planning, into grading, into the dozens of small documents and decisions that fill the gaps between classes. And every hour spent on the unglamorous half of teaching is an hour not spent on the part that actually matters: being present, being prepared, being the human in the room.
Sofia exists to give teachers some of that time back.
We believe education is a right, not a privilege. We believe the tools that help teachers should be available to every teacher, not just the ones whose districts can afford them. We believe AI, used well, can take the most repetitive parts of curriculum work off a teacher's plate and leave the genuinely human parts — the listening, the explaining, the noticing which student needs which kind of help — exactly where they belong.
That's the whole mission. Help teachers teach. Get out of the way of the rest.
